Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal information Survivalist (survivalist.com.au) collects, why, and what you can do about it. We aim to handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

The short version

What we collect

If you email us. We keep your email address, your name if you give it, and whatever you write. We use it to reply to you and to fix anything you've told us about, such as a mistake in an article. We don't add you to a mailing list.

Server logs. Like most websites, our hosting provider automatically records basic technical details when a page is requested. These can include your IP address, browser type, the page requested, the referring page and the time. These logs are used to run and secure the site, and we don't use them to identify individual readers.

Analytics. At the time of writing, the site doesn't run analytics scripts or set its own cookies. If we add analytics later, we'll use it to understand which pages are read and how people find them, in aggregate. We'll update this page to name the provider, say what it collects and whether it sets cookies, and explain how to opt out.

We don't knowingly collect sensitive information, such as health information, and we ask that you don't send it to us.

Affiliate links and cookies on other sites

Many links on this site go to retailers such as Amazon Australia, outdoor stores and brand stores. Some of these are affiliate links (see our affiliate disclosure). When you click one, the retailer or affiliate network may set a cookie or use similar technology in your browser. That lets them credit a sale to us. We don't receive your name, contact details or payment details from them. At most, we get reports about clicks and sales.

Once you leave this site, the other site's own privacy policy and cookie settings apply. We don't control them, so please read their policies. You can block or clear cookies in your browser settings.

Overseas service providers

Some of our service providers, such as hosting, content delivery and email providers, may store or process information outside Australia, including in the United States and other countries. Where that happens, we choose providers we believe handle data responsibly. However, those countries' privacy laws may differ from Australia's.

How we look after it

We use reasonable steps to protect the information we hold, such as reputable providers and secure account access. No website or email system is completely secure. We keep emails only as long as we need them, then delete them.

Accessing or correcting your information

You can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email hello@survivalist.com.au. We'll reply within 30 days.

Making a complaint

If you think we've mishandled your personal information, email us first at hello@survivalist.com.au and tell us what happened. We'll look into it and reply within 30 days.

If you're not satisfied with our response, or you don't hear back within 30 days, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.

Changes to this policy

We'll update this page when the way we handle information changes, for example if we add analytics or a newsletter, and change the date at the top.
