Off-grid living
Power and water when you're away from the grid.
This section covers power away from the mains, at camp, in a caravan or at home during a blackout. Our power station guides compare published specs, such as rated versus usable capacity, and continuous versus surge output. We haven't tested these units hands-on, and each article says so.
Plugging an appliance into a power station is something you can do yourself. Wiring into your house is a job for a licensed electrician. Queensland's Electrical Safety Office says DIY electrical work is illegal there, and hard-wired equipment must be connected by a licensed electrician.
